Darkness Has an Expiration Date (And God Already Set It)

Every 24 hours, the world reminds us of something we often forget in our spiritual lives: darkness doesn’t last forever.

No matter how long the night feels, the sun always rises. It’s not a question of if, but when. And that rhythm—darkness followed by light—is not just a natural phenomenon. It’s a spiritual promise.

In Genesis 1:5, we’re told, “God called the light ‘day,’ and the darkness he called ‘night.’ And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.” Before there was structure, before there was humanity, before there was sin—there was this rhythm. God set a boundary on darkness. He gave it a start, and He gave it an end.

Even in the night, the Earth is still rotating toward the sun. You might not see it happening, but the light is already on its way.

That’s true scientifically—but even more powerful spiritually. Darkness has an appointed time. It might seem overwhelming, even permanent, but it is not. God has already scheduled its ending.

Darkness Cannot Remain in the Presence of the Sun—or the Son

In John 8:12, Jesus says, “I am the Light of the World. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Jesus doesn’t just bring light. He is the light. And where He is, darkness cannot remain.

This doesn’t mean life won’t get hard. It doesn’t mean we won’t face grief, depression, loss, or failure. It means those things don’t have the final say.

Even Jesus Himself experienced the weight of darkness. In Luke 22:53, while being arrested, He said, “This is your hour—when darkness reigns.” But that darkness had a time limit. The betrayal, the cross, the silence of the tomb—all of it was temporary. On the third day, the Son rose, and darkness was defeated.

The Night Has an End

Psalm 30:5 puts it beautifully: “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” It doesn’t promise a painless life. It promises a purposeful one. The night will end. And when it does, joy returns—not because of perfect circumstances, but because the presence of God has never left.

There’s a misconception that if things are dark, we must be far from God. But the Bible tells a different story. Isaiah 45:3 says, “I will give you the treasures of darkness, riches stored in secret places.” Some of the most valuable revelations, the most sacred healing, and the deepest growth happen in seasons when we can’t see clearly. That doesn’t mean God has left. It often means He’s drawing closer.

What To Do While You Wait for Morning

When life feels heavy and the light hasn’t broken through yet, here’s what helps:

  • Anchor in truth. Go back to what God has already said. What He showed you in the light is still true in the dark.

  • Worship anyway. Darkness doesn’t disqualify your praise; it purifies it.

  • Hold your ground. The fact that the sun isn’t visible doesn’t mean it’s gone. The same is true with God. Faith isn’t the absence of fear or sadness—it’s the decision to keep going anyway.

The Light Is Coming

Darkness is real. Pain is real. But so is resurrection.

Just as the Earth cannot stop rotating toward the sun, your life is turning toward something better. Even if you can’t feel it. Even if it’s been a long night.

God sets boundaries for everything—including suffering. The darkness has an appointment with the light, and when that moment comes, no force in hell can stop it.

So hold on. Not because you’re strong enough, but because God is.

The sun rises.

The Son reigns.

And your morning is on the way.
