That’s Not Jesus

If Your Christian Experience Has Left You With More Guilt and Less Joy, You Found Religion, Not Jesus. There’s a subtle but crucial difference between religion and a relationship with Jesus. It’s the difference between striving and resting, between shame and freedom, between rules and grace. If your Christian walk has felt like a heavy burden—marked by guilt, striving, and an overwhelming sense of inadequacy—you may have been handed religion instead of being introduced to Jesus.

Religion Says, “Do.”

Religion thrives on performance. It’s a checklist of dos and don’ts, a system that promises favor with God if you work hard enough to earn it. Under religion, your identity is often tied to how well you obey the rules. This leads to a constant striving, leaving you perpetually worried that you’re not measuring up.

Religion thrives on guilt. It’s the voice that says, “You’ll never be good enough.” It twists conviction into condemnation and grace into obligation. And when guilt becomes the driving force of your faith, joy gets suffocated.

Jesus Says, “Done.”

Jesus came to set us free from the exhausting cycle of striving. On the cross, He declared, “It is finished.” The gospel is not a list of rules to follow but an invitation to relationship. Jesus doesn’t ask us to earn His love; He offers it freely.

In a relationship with Jesus, conviction brings change, but it’s wrapped in grace. Instead of guilt, there’s the assurance of forgiveness. Instead of striving, there’s rest. The joy of the Lord becomes your strength, and your life begins to overflow with gratitude, not obligation.

Why Does This Happen?

The transition from religion to relationship can be difficult for many reasons:

1. Misrepresentation of the Gospel: Sometimes, well-meaning people or institutions present Christianity as a moral code rather than a message of grace.

2. Cultural Christianity: In some contexts, Christianity becomes about traditions and appearances rather than a vibrant, personal faith.

3. Self-Sufficiency: It’s tempting to believe we can earn our salvation or God’s favor through our own efforts.

How to Reclaim Joy in Your Faith

1. Refocus on Jesus: Spend time in Scripture, especially in the Gospels, to rediscover who Jesus is and what He’s done for you.

2. Embrace Grace: Let go of the idea that you need to earn God’s love. Rest in the finished work of Christ.

3. Seek Community: Surround yourself with believers who reflect the joy and freedom of a relationship with Jesus.

4. Pray Honestly: Talk to God about your struggles with guilt. Invite Him to show you the joy of salvation.

The Joy of Knowing Jesus

Jesus didn’t come to give us guilt; He came to give us life—abundant and full of joy (John 10:10). If your Christian experience feels like a weight rather than a gift, it’s time to look past religion and find the person of Jesus.

In His presence, there’s fullness of joy (Psalm 16:11). In His love, there’s no room for fear or shame (1 John 4:18). And in His grace, there’s freedom—true, soul-deep freedom.

Let go of religion. Hold on to Jesus. That’s where the joy is.
